COUMADIN, INR and PT TESTING

What Is The INR International Normalized Ratio Test?

INR testing or Coumadin tests are used to measure how long it takes a person's blood to clot. It is also known as the PT Prothrombin time test. People who take Coumadin are often advised to take this test. Coumadin testing allows the physician to see how well the medication is working.

Coumadin is also known as Warfarin. Warfarin is designed to help prevent blood clots from forming. Even though warfarin helps prevent clots, it can increase the risk of excessive bleeding. That is why patients have to be continuously monitored while they are taking Warfarin.

There are many other reasons that your physician may recommend this test. If the patient has been suffering from abnormal bleeding, then the physician may recommend this test. This test can help a physician determine the cause of abnormal bleeding. It can also give an indication of how well the liver is functioning.

Furthermore, your physician may recommend this test before surgery. It may not be safe to do surgery if the patient's blood is not clotting well.

Things That Can Affect The Results Of Your Coumadin Test

There are a number of things that can affect the results of Coumadin test. The use of certain medications, such as oral contraceptives, antibiotics and hormone replacement therapy drugs, can affect the results of this test. Certain foods, such as green tea, broccoli and kale can also alter the results of this test. That is why it is important to let your healthcare provider know about any medications and supplements you are taking. You should tell your healthcare diet about the foods that you are taking.
