Learn More About Skin Cancer Screening at Our Commack and Massapequa Locations

Skin cancer screening is performed to detect if a person has cancer before the symptoms develop. Cancer is easy to treat once it is detected at an early stage. Skin cancer is an ailment that makes the malignant cells accumulate in the tissues of the skin. One of the causes of the disease is the exposure of the body to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Skin cancer is of different types depending on the kind of skin cells it affects: squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma that affect the melanocytes.

Squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma are also called non melanoma skin cancer, and they are the most common types of cancers. Melanoma that has spread to other parts of the body is difficult to cure, although it can be treated if detected and at early stages.

Skin cancer screening has been found to be helpful in locating cancer. Screening at either our Commack or Massapequa offices is efficient in lessening the chances of a person dying from the disease. People who have had cancer before are advised to go for regular skin checkups. A skin biopsy is done when the doctor has detected an area on the skin that looks abnormal. The pathologist often removes the suspicious tissue using local excision method. Then, using a special microscope, the skin biopsy is examined for cancer cells. A second pathologist is supposed to consider and give his opinion on whether the skin growth is cancerous or noncancerous.

Most melanomas can be observed using the naked eye because they first grow for a long time beneath the topmost layer of the skin before spreading to other parts. This form of growth makes it easy to detect and cure before extending to other regions of the body.
